Payment Processing Update: Our Stripe Account Has Been Closed

Stripe has closed the account DomainsProject used for subscription billing. The decision was Stripe's, and it is not one we are able to reverse. No further payments — new subscriptions or recurring charges — will be processed through that account.

We have removed checkout from this site accordingly. The pricing page no longer submits to a payment processor, the confirmation and cancellation pages that belonged to that flow are gone, and the "Manage Subscription" links have been taken down because the portal behind them was operated by Stripe and closed with the account.

Data delivery is unaffected. The crawling infrastructure, the dataset, the public GitHub repository, and the statistics pages all continue exactly as before. This is a change to how we take money, not to what we produce or to what existing subscribers receive.

What Changed

Before Now
Self-service checkout on the pricing page Every paid tier is arranged by email
Stripe customer portal for self-service billing Closed — no portal, no self-service cancellation
Recurring charges via Stripe No charges will be processed through the closed account
Card receipts from Stripe Retain them; they remain your record of payment

The practical effect for most readers is a single change: the buttons on the pricing section now open an email to us with the plan name in the subject line, in the same way the Enterprise tier has always worked.

Existing Subscriptions

If you held an active subscription billed through that account, you do not need to take any action to stop future charges. A closed account cannot process them. You do not need to cancel anything, and you should not attempt to reach the portal to do so.

What you may need to do is contact us about continuity. Because the billing relationship ran through Stripe, the closure severs the mechanism we used to track who is current on which tier. If you depend on continued delivery — a feed, a stream, a scheduled dump — write to [email protected] and we will keep your access in place while we sort the billing out separately.

Refunds

Where a refund is possible, it will be issued by Stripe directly to the original payment method. We are not the ones issuing it, and we cannot initiate it: with the account closed, we no longer have access to the payment records or the refund controls that would normally let us act on a request.

Three things follow from that, and they matter:

  • Eligibility and timing are determined by Stripe, not by us. We are not in a position to promise a refund to any particular customer, to state an amount, or to give you a date. Asking us to expedite one will not help, because there is no lever on our side to pull.
  • A refund will appear as a credit from Stripe against the card or account originally charged, not as a payment from DomainsProject. If you are reconciling statements, that is the entry to look for.
  • We will never contact you asking for card or bank details to "process a refund." Account closures and billing disruptions attract fraudulent follow-up. A legitimate refund requires nothing from you: it returns to the payment method already on file. Treat any message asking you to supply payment details, verify a card, or click through to a payment form as fraudulent, including messages that appear to come from us.

If you need documentation for your own accounting, your original Stripe receipt remains valid, and your card statement remains the authoritative record of what was charged.

How to Subscribe or Renew

Every paid tier is now handled over email. The tier buttons on the pricing section open a message to [email protected] with the plan pre-filled in the subject; you can also write to that address directly and describe what you need. Enterprise arrangements are unchanged, since they were always handled this way.

We are not announcing a replacement processor today, and we are not setting a timeline for one. Email is how paid tiers are arranged for the foreseeable future. Should that change, it will be announced here.

What Is Not Affected

  • The free tier. The open dataset on GitHub was never behind payment and is untouched.
  • The dataset and its delivery. Crawling, updates, and existing delivery arrangements continue.
  • Everything published on this site. The statistics pages, dataset documentation, research index, and blog are all unchanged and remain free.

Our measurement work does not depend on the payment processor that sat in front of it. The dataset that arrangement was funding is still being built, still being updated, and still being published.

Questions about an existing subscription, delivery, or access should go to [email protected]. Questions about a specific charge or refund are matters for Stripe and your card issuer — we have no visibility into the closed account. Dataset access remains documented at /dataset, and the free tier remains available on GitHub.
